The NI 9870 serial module adds four RS232 serial ports to NI CompactRIO systems. With an NI LabVIEW FPGA API, the four ports are accessed directly from the CompactRIO field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to offer you flexibility in communicating with serial devices. The module has individual 64 B buffers on every port that save CompactRIO FPGA space and simplify programming.
The NI 9871 C Series serial module adds four RS485/RS422 serial ports to NI CompactRIO systems. It interfaces directly with the CompactRIO field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to offer you flexibility in communicating with serial devices. The module has individual 64 B buffers on every port that save CompactRIO FPGA space and simplify programming.

CompactRIO I/O modules (updated: 03/16/2013)
National Instruments CompactRIO provides direct hardware access to the input/output circuitry of each I/O module using LabVIEW FPGA elemental I/O functions. Each I/O module contains built-in signal conditioning and screw terminal, BNC, or D-Sub connectors. A variety of I/O types is available, including ±80 mV thermocouple inputs, ±10 V simultaneous-sampling analog inputs/outputs, 24 V industrial digital I/O with up to 1 A current drive, differential/TTL digital inputs with 5 V regulated supply output for encoders, and 250 Vrms universal digital inputs.
Because the modules contain built-in signal conditioning for extended voltage ranges or industrial signal types, you can usually make your wiring connections directly from the CompactRIO module to your sensors/actuators. In most cases, the CompactRIO modules provide isolation from channel-to-earth ground.
NI CompactRIO modules connect directly to reconfigurable I/O (RIO) FPGA devices to create high-performance embedded systems that deliver the optimization and flexibility of a custom electrical circuit completely dedicated to your input/output application. The RIO FPGA hardware provides unlimited options for timing, triggering, synchronization, and sensor-level signal processing and decision making.

NI power supply (updated: 05/11/2013)
NI industrial power supplies feature long expected life, generous power reserves, and compact size. The 24 V supplies are ideal for powering any NI CompactRIO, NI Compact FieldPoint, NI Single-Board RIO, NI Smart Camera, NI touch panel computer (TPC), or NI CompactDAQ system as well as heavy accessory loads such as DC motor drives. The DIN-rail system and spring-clamp terminals do not require tools, which makes installation fast and easy. Wide range and autoselect input voltages resist user errors. The wide operating temperature range and extraordinary electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity enable trouble-free operation, even under harsh conditions.
The NI PS-15 industrial power supply guarantees power reserves of 20 percent for fluctuating loads. You can use this extra current continuously for ambient temperatures under 45 °C. With these power reserves, you do not need to oversize for dynamic loads - simply choose a unit that meets your operating requirements. In some cases, you can select a smaller unit, saving both money and space.
